K6 Inland Championship – Queen Mary Sailing Club
Queen Mary Sailing club hosted the K6 Inland Championship which was also the last event of the season for the fleet. A breezy wet weekend was forecast but as it was Saturday ended up a dull light wind day and Sunday a bright, breezy and warm day. Teams travelled from the far south west of the country and the far North. The boats were all lifted in and out by the efficient shore team and along with the fast moving race team the weekend went off without a hitch.
Saturdays racing took place on the main half of the lake sharing the race track with the 700s. The K6’s did an outer loop course, the short legs brought close racing and some lively mark rounding’s. In the light and shifty wind David Hitchcock & Ian Nicholson won all three races but not as easily as the result sheet would indicate. In race one, they had to fight off the new team of Oliver Southgate & Michael Jarvis and in race three they trailed Peter Kirkby & Richard Baker for the whole race until the last mark when they sneaked through. At the close of play Dave and Ian had a healthy lead followed by Chris Hyde & Martin Fidgeon and Peter & Richard both who put in a steady performance over the 3 races.
The following day brought a bit more wind – a typical QM day of 5 – 25 knots! Racing was on a windward leeward track on the smaller side of the lake. The stronger and shifty conditions suited the team of Dave Hall, Laura Hall & Gary Phare winning the first race of the day and leading the other two only to finish 2nd in both after being passed by Dave & Ian as they cleverly caught the big gusts downwind. The battle for 3rd and 4th overall was tight and a deciding moment was Peter Kirkby falling out after a frantic gybe allowing Chris Hyde & Martin Fidgeon to gain one place and beat Peter & Richard by one point.
After a very successful season with record turnouts the class looks forward to an exciting 2012, the fleet returns to Torquay for the Nationals and will travel to the Netherlands for its Eurocup.
