K6 Nationals 2011 - Royal Cornwall Yacht Club
Day one and true to form the first race was a battle of the 3 favourites with Dave Hitchcock & Ian Nicholson coming out on top followed by Ian Robson, Sandy Johnson & Simon Tonks and Neil Fulcher & Lawrence Crispen.
However the second race turned on its head a few times as the strong wind caused a few dramatic moments. Dave & and Ian held onto the lead but were followed into the finish closely by the team of Dave Hall, Gary Fare & Beate Pohlar.
With a gale blowing on the second day and not much sign of it easing racing was cancelled allowing the fleet to become tourists for the day.
With the loss of the 2 races and the harbour race four races were sailed on day three. The bright and breezy day forecast arrived as promised. The North West wind off the shore gave both the competitors and Race team some challenges but both seem to cope admirably. Dave & Ian took 3 of the days races with Ian, Simon & Sandy the other. Neil & Lawrence should have taken the 3rd race of the day but mis-counted the number of laps. Dave, Beate & Gary also managed to give away a 1 minute lead after finding the only patch in the middle of the final downwind leg with light wind. At the end of the day and with only 2 races scheduled for the final day David & Ian had done enough the be crowned Champions for the second year running.
So the final day was a show down for 2nd to 4th with Ian, Sandy & Simon, Dave, Beate & Gary and Neil & Laurence only 1 point apart. The final 2 races were held in the Estuary since there was a full foam up in the bay. It soon turned into a battle of wits as the 3 boats swapped places and battled it out at the front of the fleet. Ian‘s team won the first race of the day closely followed by Neil & Lawrence. To add to the mix and make life interesting the team of Nick Jones, George Jones & Mike Butler got the best results of the week with two 3rds. Dave’s team finally broke the jinx and put in a strong performance to win the last race. When all was counted there was still only point between each of them. Ian, Sandy & Simon came out on top giving them 2nd place followed by Dave, Beate & Gary in 3rd and Neil & Lawrence in 4th.
All in all a great championship with some spectacular sailing.
