K6 National Championship 2010
The first day gave the fleet a classic Riviera experience, sun and a shifty westerly breeze. Two races were held in the Bay to kick the championship off to a great start. In race one the local team of Julian Cook, Caroline Aisher & Richie Leonard led the fleet round the first mark only to be overtaken by Dave Hall & Paul Young down the run. However local knowledge obviously helped as team Cook pulled back the lead upwind and then held it to the finish. In race 2 Dave Hitchcock & Ian Nicholson led out of the start right to the finish, they were pushed hard in the shifty winds and had to work to keep Neil Fulcher & Nick Radley in their brand new boat behind them in second place.
Day 2 brought more breeze but a dull day to give the fleet some lively sailing and exiting downwind legs. Dave Hitchcock & Ian Nicholson stamped their authority on the fleet with 2 firsts and a second in the 3 races. Last years champions Ian Robson & Simon Tonks put in a solid performance to pull them up to second overall at this point in the championship.
The weekend came and with it a new format that the class wanted to try – 6 short races in one day. The race team from Torbay pulled it off and achieved all 6 in just over 4 hours with the minimum of delay between starts. With the length of the races being so short a good start and first beat became paramount. Dave & Ian did not get it all their own way but by the end of the day and with only 2 races left on the last day they had wrapped up the championship to win overall.
Going into the last day places 2 to 4 were still wide open and it was down to the last run of the last race to decide those final positions. With the wind coming over the town from the North the shifty winds gave some heart stopping moments. In the very last race Neil Fulcher & Lawrence Crispin opened up a huge lead only to see it vanish the same way the wind did leaving them parked just 100 meters from the windward mark. This allowed Peter Kirby & Richard Barker pull through with a number of other boats and go on to win the race but it was not enough for Ian Robson & Simon Tonks to capitalise on. In the end 2nd and 3rd were decided on count back with Neil & Lawrence just getting the edge. The local team of Julian Cook, Caroline Aisher & Richie Leonard bring up the rear of the group in 4th.
A tremendous event both on and off the water. A big thanks to the Royal Torbay YC, its race team and all the members that made the fleet feel very welcome, putting themselves out to help both on shore and in the Bay.
